Sometimes, the weight of daily responsibilities and stress can be exhausting. In fact, a poll from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health discovered 49 percent of Americans experienced a major stressful event in the past year and 26 percent reported they were under high amounts of stress.
A little stress can be good as it can motivate you to grow and evolve your work ethic; however, constant stress does just the opposite, debilitating overall health and weakening the immune system. Now is the perfect time to seek new ways to reduce stress and improve well-being. A day of indulgence works wonders for your mind and body and lets you engage in activities that promote relaxation, alleviate stress and decrease tension. Here are a few ways you can unwind, reduce stress and recharge:
Book a full body massage
Allow licensed massage therapists, equipped with the necessary training and knowledge, to work the knots out of your muscles and ease your aches and pains. Massage therapy works tension out of the body and can help release feel-good endorphins. A massage can also improve circulation and decrease blood pressure.
Schedule a manicure and pedicure appointment
If you don’t have the time for a massage, having your hands and feet pampered is a great substitute. Most salons offer different types of manicures and pedicures, depending on personal preference.
Take a retreat
Plan a trip to a resort or small hotel that is away from the hustle and bustle of your regular environment. A change of scenery and the chance to take a brief break from daily routines can effectively relieve stress. While you’re on your mini vacation, consider staying at a low-tech accommodation and turning your phone or tablet off for a few days.
Try relaxing aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils to provoke a mental and physical response. Lavender is a popular, relaxing scent that can be used during a massage or sprinkled in baths to induce a sense of calm. Experiment with other scents and oils to achieve the desired result.
Laugh with friends
Organize a gathering with your closest friends. Step out on the town for drinks and conversation, or huddle around the television and watch your favorite comedy. Laughter is a great remedy for stress as is the company of other people, who can distract you from stress and provide excellent support.
Take on fewer responsibilities
We often take on more tasks than necessary and exhaust ourselves trying to fulfill them all. Examine your current schedule and cross out anything you know isn’t crucial. In addition to freeing yourself up a bit, use that extra time to engage in some of the activities listed above.
